A brush fire driven by gusty winds from the Santa Ynez Mountains destroyed up to 200 homes in Santa Barbara California. Officials said the blaze started Tuesday night and was man caused but arson was not confirmed. Firefighters battled the blaze as residents fled and some neighbors tried to wet roofs with garden hoses.
A massive wind driven fire in Santa Barbara destroyed 25 homes in Mission Ridge and nearby areas. Residents described the scene as indescribable while crews faced narrow roads and crowds hampering containment. At least 17 injured, including a boy sprayed with borate solution, and looting reports prompted police intervention. The fire started in Los Padres National Forest, fueled by chaparral and eucalyptus, and officials say it was man caused with containment still uncertain.
The Center for Short-Lived Phenomena reports the spruce budworm and forest tent caterpillar are feeding across Indiana to Maine in a rare simultaneous outbreak not seen since 1955. Both species are expected to decline in a few years, though widespread defoliation leaves dead trees at risk of fire.
Potssdam New York AP Gary Lashomb a millionaire lottery winner from five months ago files for unemployment benefits claiming hardship and seeking jobless aid though his win makes him eligible.
Lashomb, 31, who won a $1,000-a-week life prize, reportedly applied for unemployment after being laid off from a $175-a-week produce manager job at Super D supermarket. Officials could not be reached. Lottery officials say winners may file for benefits. state Labor denies naming recipients. Lashomb, born March 8, became a state instant millionaire and remains working.
