Steel strike costs grim totals hit industry and workers

The AP reports via Steel magazine that by evening the steel strike will have cost steel companies 378 million dollars in sales and workers 135.2 million in lost wages. Overhead and non productive salaries add 72 million, with 20 million to shut down and another 20 million to restart. Ingot production losses reach about 3.68 million tons, while post strike output in unaffected mills runs 382 thousand tons. Iron ore stocks remain good but rail freight may shift to Lake Superior ore if the strike endures. A Steel survey shows 43 percent more equipment orders in the second half versus the first six months of the year.
