England policing admired by Middletown officers visit
Three Middletown police officers, Ptl. George Jeffery, Sgt. Merle Stethem and ex-officer Harvey Poff, toured London with Sinclair Community College students. They praised England’s professional force, noted only 43 police departments there versus 46,000 at home, and suggested smaller agencies hinder affordability of full professionalism. They observed generous hosts and formed friendships for future visits.

Franklin men escape as wake swamps houseboat
Harold Cecil Runyon and William Banks escaped injury when a 25 foot houseboat was swamped by a barge wake on the Ohio River near Covington Kentucky. The owner and passenger were rescued by a passing boater who towed the craft to shore. Banks could not swim and remained aboard with life jackets as the boat filled with water. The boat stayed afloat thanks to a front air pocket. After beaching on the Kentucky shore it broke loose and drifted a mile downriver before police and salvage plans were arranged.
