Thousands filled Smith Park under blue skies for the Ohio Challenge Hot Air Balloon Festival though evening launches were canceled by gusty winds. Two balloons rose briefly as spectators cheered when skydivers from Team Fastrax landed safely. Organizers credited safety for not inflating most balloons, with ten balloons lighting the area around 9 p.m. as crowds swelled beyond prior records.
Jeanne Wood, 79, of Middleton, fell from the basket during a landing of Sean's Balloon piloted by Bob Rice in St Clair Township near Edgewood High School. Wind gusts caused a bumpy touchdown. she suffered a cracked rib but was treated and released from Middletown Regional Hospital. Response included Butler County Sheriff deputies life squad and Cinergy employees.
In Huber Heights Donnie Ray Sweeney and Rhonda Michelle Short were killed after a breakup with Duane Allen Short. Duane Short faces two counts of aggravated murder among seven felonies. Rhonda had a protection order and sought help to escape an abusive marriage.
Franklin City Schools seeks Aug 3 ballot approval for a 9.79 mill operating levy a 4.73 mill bonds to add classrooms and a 0.19 per bond to raise 1.2 million over 28 years. Administrators say finances worsen requiring support for day to day expenses health and safety needs and building renovations.
