Ten people died in a three hour gun battle on Cleveland's East Side as snipers fired from rooftops and alleys. Police and National Guardsmen battled attackers amid arson and looting with 24 arrests.
In Cleveland on Tuesday night a gun battle between police and a group of Black suspects ended with officers trapped in a street encounter. Wounded officers required armored cars and tear gas as National Guard calls echoed for reinforcements. An eyewitness described gunfire near an apartment building and a policeman being shot, while residents sought safety.
Chicago AP report says the United Auto Workers and the Teamsters announced the Alliance for Labor Action to tackle social problems and recruit unorganized workers, especially in agriculture, without merging. They plan a 1969 national conference and emphasize social action, emergency defense funds, and community unions.
The Middletown and Miami Valley forecast calls for variable cloudiness and warm humid conditions with scattered showers and thunderstorms today through Thursday. Lows tonight in the upper 60s to lower 70s. Yesterday's high reached 89 degrees and the morning low was 73.
