U S Navy ship Coronado docks in Beirut delivering 384 Americans and 82 Lebanese from Cyprus amid Cyprus trapping Turkish invasion. The evacuees join over 100 Americans sheltered at Nicosia Hilton as Greek Cypriot soldiers fired into hallways. Crew aboard the Coronado handed out ice cream and lent bunks to refugees.
The Greek Cypriot who succeeded Archbishop Makarios quit the presidency and a veteran regime figure was named as successor, seen as a step toward a Cyprus Turkey peace accord. Britain reported fresh fighting on the Kyrenia invasion beachhead despite a cease fire. Turkey’s deputy PM Erbakan renewed calls for partition of the island.
Senator Edward Gurney of Florida announces he will not seek reelection after a federal grand jury indicted him on conspiracy bribery and perjury charges in an influence peddling case. He pleads innocence and says he will decide on a future political return after clearing his name.

United Nations forces in Cyprus assumed control of the international airport near Nicosia following a new and serious breach of the cease-fire reported earlier near the airport. The announcement came from UN headquarters in New York.
