Carter defends crude oil tax after Schlesinger remarks
The Carter administration insists the crude oil tax remains viable despite notes of dismissal by Energy Secretary Schlesinger during a meeting with East Coast senators. Attendees say he hinted the tax may be dead, while a spokesman called the remark joking. The White House says no oil import fees or quotas will be imposed unless Congress adjourns without passage this year.
