Ohio high court rejects Akron and Cincinnati rate appeals
Ohio's Supreme Court, in two 6-1 rulings, refused appeals by Akron and Cincinnati against rate increases for Ohio Edison Co. and Cincinnati Gas & Electric Co. Justice Locher dissented in both, criticizing the use of stipulations and charitable contributions as business costs. The Akron case kept the 67 percent rate hike amid disputes over rate base calculation. The Cincinnati case upheld surcharges and the nine cent per thousand cubic feet gas extra, rejecting due process and charitable contribution challenges. A separate case reversed a forgery conviction due to missing cross-examination of a key witness.

Ohio Edison seeks nuclear plant as reserve shortfall looms
Ohio Edison's witnesses face cross examination in a state Power Sit Commission hearing on a $2.9 billion Berlin Heights nuclear plant. New York economist Louis Guth warns utilities will hold only 17.1 percent reserve by 1988, below the 20 percent industry standard, unless both reactor units are built, which Guth says would raise reserves to 24.9 percent. The hearing covers Ohio Edison and its affiliates Duquesne Power and Light, Cleveland Electric Illuminating, Toledo Edison, and Penn Power as testimony continues.
