In Memphis a 4 year old was held hostage by his father Fred Sims 27 after a five mile high speed chase ending with police subduing him near a Wells Fargo building. The child was unharmed and both were taken to hospital for examination.
Former assistant attorney general testified that President Nixon personally sought to relocate bugged White House tapes away from the FBI. Robert Mardian said he was summoned in 1971 to San Clemente after FBI officials warned of potential leaks and that Hoover could be pressured to use the tapes to shore up his position.
The FBI hunts the culprit behind a phone hoax that disrupted the Senate Watergate committee hearing. A caller pretended to be Secretary Shultz’s secretary, leading Sen. Sam Ervin to believe Nixon might surrender, before officials revealed it was a hoax and FBI inquiry began.
President Nixon, appearing well, left Bethesda Naval Medical Center after a week with viral pneumonia. He credited the spirit of Bethesda and Navy corpsmen for his quicker recovery and thanked nurses, doctors, and corpsmen as he departed.
Cloudy skies and showers are expected in the Middletown area tonight with lows in the 70s. Saturday brings more showers and highs in the 80s. Yesterday’s high reached 90 and the overnight low 71. A trace of rain was recorded by 8 a.m. today.
County officials say the overall real estate tax base will rise 12 percent before next year’s bills. Ohio Supreme Court reappraisal drives annual value checks to keep taxable value at 35 percent of true value.
A gunman robbed a car at the I-75 rest area near Monroe early today. Nicola Yussuf Kassis of Livonia Michigan was shot in the left side and taken to Middletown Hospital in serious condition. Two passengers Sandra Jones 17 and Raja Shahin 23 were with him as authorities search for a lone suspect.
Government data show the cost of living up seven tenths of one per cent in June, marking a fifth straight month of higher consumer prices. Grocery prices led gains, rising 1.7 per cent and about 16 per cent higher than a year ago, as Nixon prepared to freeze prices.
