Senator McCarthy returns to a long stalled Red hunting inquiry as the Senate subcommittee opens a regular session in Washington. He accuses defense plants in the Boston area of harboring subversives and seeks to subpoena three Boston men tied to his list of 133 names.
About 5,000 French Union troops with tanks pushed a mopup operation against Vietminh bases 18 miles northwest of Hanoi. French officials said 28 rebels were killed and 13 captured with light French losses. Earlier, 215 rebels were reported killed when a battalion attacked north Hung Yen. French tanks and gunners repelled the assault. Night bombing by B26s targeted Vietminh bases around the Red River delta.
