Ohio official Charles A. Burns, Assistant Director of Highway Safety, remains under investigation after Gov. Rhodes ordered a vacation. The 58 year old has not filed a federal income tax return since 1950, per the Plain Dealer. Burns, once Akron recreation director and city councilman, was hospitalized in June and declined comment.
Sen. Barry Goldwater returns to his desert home while Republicans rattle over extremism remarks at the Republican National Convention. He signals a formal withdrawal of his Senate bid as he navigates a sharpened clash with Nelson Rockefeller, Charles Percy, and Eisenhower aides. Goldwater defends extremism as defense of liberty, faults moderation, and hints at patronage shifts to the party, with Johnson’s ticket eyed as a possible match for his running mate.
Rome AP reports after 22 days of talks Premier Moro secured agreement on a new cabinet keeping the Socialists in government. The Christian Democrat leader planned to seek presidential endorsement to reclaim the premiership and end Italy’s 23rd postwar political crisis. The reshuffle would involve Christian Democrats, Socialists, Democratic Socialists, and Republicans amid rising labor unrest.

Senate action on lat ter envelopes for nearly two million armed forces personnel appears likely after House approval of details. Pay boosts would start Aug or Sept, costing about 207 million yearly, with monthly increases from 49.30 to 3 dollars, a 22 percent raise for most ranks and 8 percent for newer officers. The plan, urged by the Armed Services Committee, covers Army Navy Air Force Marine Corps plus Coast Guard and Public Health Service. 843,645 enlisted with under two years would see no raise.
In Cairo the second African summit opened with UN Secretary General Thant urging peaceful end to colonial rule and Egyptian President Nasser demanding stronger action.
