Early detection boosts breast cancer outcomes and surgery options
A national detection program has enrolled 280000 women and found about 2000 cancers. Over 80 percent were identified before axillary node spread, improving five year disease free survival to 85 90 percent when nodes are not involved and enabling less radical surgery and better breast reconstruction. The ACS and NCI officials stress ongoing benefits for longevity, reduced surgery, and emotional recovery.
