At Scioto Country Club Jack Hesler shot one over par 72 for a 303 total to win the Ohio Amateur Golf Tournament by one stroke over Chris Roderick of Gallipolis and Ray Sovik of Youngstown. Hesler, a 42 year old Columbus insurance executive, became a three state top amateur with this second Ohio Amateur title earned Friday.
Cincinnati AP reports Lida Fee Matthews of Portsmouth won her third Ohio Women's State Golf Tournament title at Camargo Country Club. She defeated Sandra Jones 4 and 2 in the 36 hole final, saying she has no plan to turn pro and would tire if playing year round. Matthews led early with birdies and finished the match 1 over par over the final 16 holes.
Kathy Whitworth and Judy Kimball shot a best ball 6n to grab the second round lead in the 54 hole Ladies PGA Team Championship in Mashpee Massachusetts. Their 36 hole total reached 138, one stroke ahead of Jo Ann Carner Pam Higgins and Marlene Hagge Judy Rankin groups. Sandra Spuzich Peggy Wilson slid from first round co lead to a tie for fourth at 140 after a 72.
Robert Bromberg a 26 year old from Alameda California and Fred Haney 22 from Forest Grove Oregon share the 18 hole lead in the U S Public Links golf championship after Bromberg shot a 1 under par 71 in the hot Phoenix venue. Bromberg stroked birdies on three of the first five holes and nearly eagle on the 7th while Haney bogeyed three late holes in a 75.
Portland hospital officials said former Notre Dame coach Frank Leahy remained in critical condition after abdominal surgery. Leahy, 62, had headed Notre Dame from 1941 to 1953 and won four national titles during his 11 years there. He has been in the ICU at St. Vincent Hospital since the operation for removal of fatty tissue.
Joey Stricker of Batavia eyes a repeat late model feature win at Tri-County Speedway as regular Saturday program unfolds with time trials at 7 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m. He faces Larry Moore Pat Patrick Chuck McWilliams and Ralph Lathem for the main event after his Wednesday victory. Tom Simmons seeks his fourth sports sedan feature win following a midweek win over Charlie Espich in a 15-lap race. Time trials for the Kil Kare Dragstrip begin at 4 30 p.m with eliminations at 8 15 p.m. The Edgewater Park Dragway Top Fuel Championship event features 20 leading dragsters including Don Johnson for a $5 000 purse with racing at 7 30 p.m.
Mirus Ifter of Ethiopia, guarding Emperor Haile Selassie, lost count of laps in the 5,000 meters at the USA Pan African track meet in Durham. He stopped after the final lap signaling gun, allowing Steve Prefontaine to surge from 75 yards back to win. Keino consoles Ifter in the locker room. Africa's Kipchoge Keino to run the 1,500 meters next.
