Trepanier Wins Middletown Opti Derby as DeHart Narrowly Fails
Dale Trepanier, 13, won the 15th annual Opti Soap Box Derby championship in Class A with a 25.89 second final, earning $750 in scholarships and a trip to Akron nationals. His cousin Chris DeHart, Class B champ, lost on the seventh run by draw. Dale’s victory comes after a near collision earlier and he set a sub 26 second mark twice, including a semi final. The 90 contestants marked a record field, with Dale sponsored by Converter Gravure and the event to be capped by a Derby Banquet July 27.
