A short circuit caused a fiery crash of a B 29 at Smoky Hill Army Air Base near Salina. Nine crewmen were killed and one seriously injured as the aircraft failed to bail out at low altitude. Three crewmen escaped by parachute when the plane was under 1200 feet.
Two men clung to driftwood in Boston harbor after their fishing boat sank. Police rushed them ashore, treated at City Hospital, and photographers captured the scene. Names given include William A Grinnell of Portland and William Strachen of Boston. officials said they had escaped from Deer Island Jail.
Cairo reports say Israeli high command announced planes attacked Egypt for a second time dropping seven tons of bombs on Tell El Arish airfield near the Palestine border. At the same time Egypt renewed attack on Tel Aviv. Moslem demonstrators in Cairo protested the attack on the capital as police dispersed a crowd of about 1000 in front of Al Azhar mosque.
Multiple tremors were recorded by seismographs in Boston College Cleveland and Guatemala City early today. The events likely originated in Central America near Guatemala with one quake described as very strong. No damage was reported.
The Ford Motor Company increases wages for 25,500 salaried employees by 20 to 50 dollars a month, about nine percent on average. Ford rejects federal mediation while continuing wage talks with the CIO United Auto Workers, as production workers seek higher wages and benefits. In Wapakoneta a five year old, Tommy Presar, and four year old Pat Heinl, climbed into an unused ice box at Tommy Presar’s home. Tommy died before his mother could reach them while Pat was treated in Lima Hospital in fair condition.

Burt Shotton returns to manage the Dodgers as Durocher shifts to the Giants and Ott takes a vacation before a possible role on the Giants staff. Branch Rickey announced the changes in Cincinnati after conferring with Durocher.
