Residents faced scorching heat with backyard thermometers reaching 102 to 104 degrees in the afternoon. Armco's East Works saw 110 degrees by 4 45 p m. Cooler breezes arrived overnight and reduced temperatures to equalize by seven this morning.
Geneva reports say France and Britain, buoyed by U S support, move toward a cease fire by July 20. Mendes France vows resignation if no peace accord by then as Dulles Smith and Eden push for a united front and possible partition of Viet Nam with Bao Dai led South. The Associated Press reports a severe heat wave pushing the death toll toward 100 as violent storms in the East and a cooling front in the Midwest relieve temperatures. Winds of near-hurricane strength uprooted trees and caused widespread damage across New England and Mid-Atlantic states. Four Gaines County officers with Texas Rangers escorted Hughes to Lubbock for safekeeping amid fears of mob action. The infant Jackie Jo Davis was found unharmed and returned to the home near the Texas New Mexico line.
Eddie Marmur, 21, a weight lifter from Seattle, tried to hijack a Trans-Canada airliner at Seattle Tacoma International Airport seeking passage to Africa to avoid the draft. He fired two shots at the stewardess Isabel Abraham who escaped, prompting police to intervene and Marmur to surrender without faces charges at that time.
A 400 pound bear wandered along Ohimato's main street yesterday drawing no crowds or provocations as locals watched in stunned silence. Police and wildlife officials cordoned off the area and urged residents to avoid approaching the animal while a containment plan was arranged.

Washington reports Gen. Alfred Gruenther says Germany must contribute to Western defense because the alliance could not withstand a full Russian attack.
