Power crisis blamed on heat wave widens across nation

Washington AP reports Federal Power Commission Chairman Lee C. White warned the searing heat wave is pushing the United States east of the Rockies into a critical electric power situation though he does not foresee a repeat of last November’s blackout. He cited Nebraska’s Monday outage as proof of the need for better interconnection and urged stronger ties to the west. The commission sent 500 utilities notices to marshal power resources. Weather expert J. Murray Mitchell Jr. attributes part of the heat to jet stream patterns. Drought worsens in the Northeast stressing reservoirs and underground supplies.
