New Planet HD 37605b Detected Near Betelgeuse

Astronomers deduced a planet orbiting HD 37605 in Orion by star wiggling, confirming HD 37605b as a gas giant at least 2.8 times Jupiter’s mass. It completes an orbit every 54 days, about 140 light years away, making it the 123rd planet found outside the solar system. Discovery reported in The Dallas Morning News online edition.

Insurgent Attacks Kill Three U S Soldiers Near Baghdad

Insurgents ambushed two U S patrols north of Baghdad on Sunday killing three soldiers and a civilian while wounding others. In Samarra a roadside bomb and exchange of fire killed two more soldiers and wounded three. The Philippine government rejected an insurgent ultimatum to withdraw its peacekeeping force, though the deadline was extended briefly.

Simpson takes over Preble County Sheriff job after sudden death

Mike Simpson was appointed sheriff of Preble County after Sheriff Tom Hayes died from an aneurysm during surgery on December 3. The 37-year-old, son of a longtime department member, says the role brings heavy responsibilities and he plans to retire after a five-year term, with FBI National Academy training already completed.
