Democratic delegates at Madison Square Garden are expected to nominate Jimmy Carter for president amid unity after prior party rifts. Senators Frank Church and Adlai Stevenson III are among the final seven for vice president, with Carter noting three top contenders while interviews finish.
John Glenn opens the Democratic National Convention session as a potential running mate for Jimmy Carter. The Ohio senator, famed for orbiting Earth in 1962, remains a national figure. he has focused on energy, nuclear safety, and energy efficiency while courting Carter's circle for a possible vice presidency.
Rep Barbara Jordan of Houston delivers the second keynote at the Democratic National Convention. A magna cum laude graduate of Southern University, she is the first black woman elected to Congress from the South and is known for independence in the House. Carter leads in delegate polls with 19 primary wins and 1,653 votes, while Ford trails Reagan narrowly as the GOP convention approaches.
Daniel Gearhart, a 34 year old Vietnam veteran who advertised as a mercenary in Soldier of Fortune, was shot by Angolan authorities after three days in the country. His widow Sheila Gearhart in Maryland says the Angolan government requires 5000 to retrieve his body for burial amid family debt and welfare concerns. Neighbors and church members raised several thousand dollars but she cannot meet the demand. The widow suspects CIA involvement in her husband’s fate.
The Federal Trade Commission announced consent orders with Hertz, Avis, and National that bar they from conspiring to monopolize or fix airport rental prices. The agencies say the three controlled about 96 percent of the airport market in 1973 and must avoid agreements with airports that hurt competitors. No admissions were made by the firms.
Forecast calls for clear skies and cool air tonight with a low around 55. Tuesday will be mostly sunny with a high near 80 and only a 10 percent rain chance tonight, zero Tuesday. In Greenbelt Maryland a wild white horse roams the median of the Baltimore Washington Parkway eluding Park Police. Officers say the animal has resisted tranquilizer darts and poses a risk to motorists. Lt. Lloyd E Hill notes the horse may shift between parkway and nearby farms as calls from drivers continue.
