CBO says recession unlikely despite job dip

Washington AP reports that Alice Rivlin of the CBO told the House Budget Committee that the economy may grow slowly through 1979 but is unlikely to slip into recession. Inflation outlook worsens, tax cuts and limited rate hikes are seen as sustaining spending while unemployment could edge up to 5.2 6.0 percent by year end.

Worlds Sentenced to Three Years in Florida Spotlighted by Review

Mary Worlds 29, a black mother of two, began a three year term for aggravated battery after a 1977 conviction by an all white jury at Sunland Training Center. Phone workers strike across Ohio Bell offices

Columbus Ohio AP long distance telephone workers from Local 4354 of the Communications Workers of America began a strike protesting company action against Nashville workers who refused to cross picket lines. Pickets formed at Ohio Bell offices while Toledo and Cleveland members vote and the strike spreads to 15 cities as workers oppose six day work weeks.

Mortgage rates rise to record highs for conventional loans

The Federal Home Loan Bank Board said average effective conventional mortgage rates reached 9.46 percent last month, the highest since 1963. The prior peak was 9.37 percent, seen last May and in December 1974. Average new home price was 62,900 dollars and the average loan 46,100 dollars for a 28.3 year term.
