In Saigon a North Vietnamese offensive struck the Binh Long base camp near Saigon with about 1000 regulars. After heavy fighting the attackers were repulsed with at least 116 killed and many wounded or captured. An American paratrooper unit suffered 25 dead and 49 wounded in a separate ambush in the central highlands.
McNamara will not back all requested new troops for Vietnam and orders cutting excess from the 466,000 US force. He reportedly urges limited integration of Vietnamese units to boost Saigon’s role while some more troops may follow his report to President Johnson.
Tonight will be partly cloudy with a cooler feel and upper 60s low. Wednesday turns sunny and mild with high near 99 and lower humidity. Yesterday reached 79 with a 70 overnight low. Middle town logged 1.32 inches of rain in the small hours, July rainfall total 1.6 inches. First six months total rainfall 15.55 inches, compared with 16.41 inches last year.

A severe thunderstorm with 75 mph winds struck the Southern Kentucky Fair Monday night. A large tent collapsed but scores escaped serious injury. twelve people were hospitalized briefly. About 1,500 people were present and one food tent worker described being thrown about. The Weather Bureau reported 1.1 inches of rain in 28 minutes.
Clarence C. Buchwald, 71, was shot in the chest during a holdup at a sixth floor jewelry store at 850 Euclid Ave Cleveland. He fired back at the bandit and was wounded by one of three shots from the robber. Buchwald remained in fair condition at St. Vincent Charity Hospital.
The Senate moves toward passage of a disclosure bill covering about 100 billion dollars in annual borrowing. It requires true annual interest and total financing charges, but leaves regulation to others. Proxmire defends the measure as consumer aid while exemptions for revolving credit and small loans draw criticism.
In Memphis at the love-in the crowd average age 17 includes hippies and skeptical onlookers. A Ku Klux Klan member in sandals and Army shirt handed out literature saying the Klan is a pure American organization. Flower children ignored him as they continued the living-in with an African beat and a wary photographer chased by a protesting girl.
Charles G. Cusick a former Colgate guard and current Browns scout is Cleveland s new FBI agent in charge. The 45 year old FBI veteran replaces Charles W Bates who moves to San Francisco and arrives from Norfolk Virginia.
