A Viet Cong attacker tossed a grenade hidden in bread at the U.S. Embassy in Saigon but it did not explode after the thrower pulled the detonator by mistake. Vietnamese police cordoned the area. a swift search followed.
Ohio safety officials reported 21 deaths on highways over a seven hour Fourth of July weekend, just under the predicted 23. The period began Thursday 6 p.m. and ended Sunday midnight. Other accidents raised total toll to at least 83, including five drownings and nine deaths in miscellaneous incidents such as a house fire in Ashtabula County.
In Blantyre, Malawi celebrated independence as Nyasaland became Malawi at midnight. Dr Hastings Banda presided with Prince Philip and Governor Sir Glyn Jones attending. Thousands gathered in the central stadium for tribal dances and a grand parade marking Africa's 37th nation.

Police used tear gas dogs and cattle prods to break up July Fourth riots at five locations from coast to coast. About 200 youths were arrested and several officers and rioters injured. Locations include Indian Lake Ohio Garnett Kansas West Yellowstone Montana Pleasanton California and Newport Rhode Island.
