United Church of Christ Eyes Blend in Constitution
Cleveland AP report notes the General Synod opens a three day session with 500 delegates and 209 visitors to discuss a proposed constitution. The merger unites Congregational Christian Churches and Evangelical and Reformed Church, with 2.2 million members, under a blended federal structure balancing central authority and local autonomy. The constitution aims to ease historic unity barriers and attract ecumenical interest from Christian bodies. If approved, it advances to congregations and area conferences for endorsement, potentially taking effect at the 1961 General Synod in Philadelphia.
