Editorial thumbs up and down across Ohio politics and schools
The column cheers Cincinnati Mayor Charlie Luken for backing a riverboat casino amendment while noting Middletown’s stake in a Shawnee tribe led project. It also praises Miami University for full domestic partner benefits, profiles local campaign dynamics involving Sheriff Gabbard and Rick Jones, commends Middletown board for thorough treasurer search, and criticizes Miamisburg’s drug testing plan for student athletes as a mixed message.

Excellence a fitting tribute to Della Ewalt and community
A long tribute to Della Ewalt highlights her 30 year teaching career at Monroe High School starting in 1951, plus 22 years educating Middletown after retirement. Her work on litter control, recycling, waste management and beautification united residents and businesses to lift the city’s image. The letter advocates a Della Ewalt Memorial Scholarship Fund and requests support via the Middletown Community Foundation. The writer also recommends promoting from within for Middletown High School girls basketball coaching, citing Coach Robert Preston as a smooth fit. A separate note proposes naming a new road Bob Myers Way in honor of WWII veteran Robert R. Myers, a Monroe alum with track records, union leadership, and community service.
