Deep Impact mission aims to collide with Tempel 1 comet
NASA plans a collision with comet Tempel 1 to study debris dispersal and crater formation, while space telescopes Hubble Chandra and Spitzer record the event. The encounter could produce a cone shaped debris plume two to fourteen stories deep and a crater up to a football stadium in size. Deep Impact launched from Cape Canaveral in January for a six month 268 million mile voyage. The 1867 discovered Tempel 1 orbits the sun between Mars and Jupiter roughly every six years.
