Captain Joseph Tosolini of Bethany Connecticut and navigator Larry Guernon defended the DC8 flight carrying 214 Vietnam bound troops. They denied straying into Soviet air space off the Kurile Islands after being intercepted by MIGs and held for two days before the plane landed at Iturup and later flew to Yokota Japan.
In New York AP report a man shot a woman to death in a Central Park comfort station then wounded an elderly man and two police officers before being killed by officers. Tear gas drove the heavy-set gunman from a tree cluster near the Metropolitan Museum of Art as he fled.
Hanoi announced it will release three U S pilots captured in North Vietnam without naming them or detailing timing. The move follows a prior release during the lunar new year and occurs amid stalled Paris talks over prisoners and bombing cessation. Le Duc Tho arrived in Hanoi with no further details.
Ambassador Harriman said Hanoi’s pledge to free three American fliers could be a straw in the wind toward progress in peace negotiations. He returned to the 11th session of talks with Nguyen Thuy amid Hanoi’s firm rejection of U.S. demands and without new U.S. policy instructions.
President Johnson plans a Latin flavored Independence Day with Latin American ambassadors at HemisFair in San Antonio Texas. He will headline a flag raising ceremony and host Bolivia's President Rene Barrientos Ortuno at the LBJ ranch. He then travels to San Salvador for talks with Central American leaders and stops at Guatemala Honduras Nicaragua and Costa Rica before returning.
U S fighter bombers conducted the largest North Vietnam raids in two months, while B52s pressed heavy saturation bombing near the DMZ. Ground troops reported 155 enemy killed in northern South Vietnam, and U S aircraft lost two fighters, one light recon plane, and a Marine helicopter.
Houston AP reports the 24th human heart transplant patient at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital is listed as satisfactory two hours after a two hour operation. George Henry DeBord 46 of Helotes Texas is alert and well as doctors await further signs from the artificial nourishment heart. DeBord received the heart of Maxie Elwood Anderson 50 of Lufkin Texas who was brain hemorrhage victim and the oldest donor at the hospital.
The Miami Valley area shows partly cloudy skies and cool temperatures today and on the 4th. Highs in the upper 80s with overnight lows around the low 40s. Yesterday reached 77 with a 52 degree low this morning. No rainfall recorded and none expected through the holiday.
Reporters noted that people in Washington felt satisfied with the presentation and believed ongoing talks would lead both sides to a peaceful settlement. Public mood embraced cautious optimism about near term diplomacy and conflict deescalation.
Pfc Clarence R Bicknell 20 of Middletown was aboard the Seaboard World plane forced down by Soviets on Iturup Island en route from Fort Lewis to Vietnam. His family in Bethany says he called from Fort Lewis Saturday night and has not been heard since. Also aboard was Spec Keneth D Godbey 20 of Hamilton, who lived with his sister James Murrell prior to enlistment.
In Mason County Court Judge James Thompson ordered Rolfe Lee to whip his son Otto Allen Lee with a belt after Otto admitted speeding and racing. The boy, 19, received a 15 lash sentence and was placed on three years probation.
