Legion Commander Warns Of Communist Threat From Educators
Miami Beach Florida. American Legion national commander Lewis K. Gough warned that the real danger of communism lies not with the oppressed but with eminent scholars who aid the cause. He cited 60 witnesses before the House Un-American Activities Committee, noting 58 were native Americans of high learning and that most refused to answer questions. He urged NEA leaders to repudiate efforts perceived as aiding communist ideals and cautioned against infiltration into the teaching profession. The NEA convention will consider votes to lower the voting age to 18 and raise compulsory attendance, along with penalties for narcotics sales to minors and emphasis on athletics. A committee trimmed a proposed requirement for educators to testify in investigations, preferring frank testimony without invoking the Fifth Amendment. The NEA also endorsed a book burning critique citing President Eisenhower. The resolution condemns supports for purges and acts that restrict thought or undermine trust in the American people.
