Outgoing acting FBI Director William D. Ruckelshaus says restoring public confidence in government will be an incredible job. He vows openness and performance to regain trust, and mulls staying only if he can ensure continuity amid Watergate turmoil.
Dean testifies before the Senate Watergate committee for five days recounting meetings where he says he warned the President and discussed political espionage. He admits knowing a great deal and aiding cover up of the June 17 1972 D N C break in.
President Nixon signs a measure to end U S combat actions in Indochina by August 15 and pledges to seek new war powers if needed to push a Cambodian settlement. He supports a temporary funding cut to avoid a federal shutdown while negotiating broader appropriations for 1974.
President Nixon reassures business leaders and consumers that the price freeze will last only a short time. He cites Phase 4 wage price controls, farm price ceilings, and export embargoes while promising farm supply increases to ease inflation and seeking authority to curb exports temporarily.
The Census Bureau reports the median family income in America climbed 8.1 percent to 11120 for 54.5 million families last year. It notes black families earned only 6860, while median means an equal split above and below, not an average.
Thundershowers are forecast for the Middletown area tonight with low temperatures in the 60s. Clearing skies are expected Tuesday with highs around 80. Yesterday’s high reached 90 and the overnight low was 70. Weather details are on page 28.
In a Princeton AP report Gallup says 67 percent of Americans doubt that some Congress members were elected by unethical or illegal methods. A separate poll shows low confidence in big business and labor unions, with only 26 percent expressing high confidence.
