President John F Kennedy plans to attend the Inter American Economic and Social Conference in Uruguay next month if his schedule allows. United States officials say he hopes to participate and is not deterred by the possibility that Fidel Castro might also attend to push his revolution politics.
The disbanded Tractors for Freedom Committee seeks funds to cover the return mailing costs from the failed prisoner deal with Cuba. A Wednesday meeting will outline how to raise voluntary contributions, with about 70,000 letters sent and only a few thousand dollars expected to be needed to refund donors. Victor G. Reuther, assisting UAW President Walter P. Reuther, said none of the donated money will be kept by the committee.
Janice M Pitchford 28 ignored divers' pleas and leaped from a third story roof into a pool in a fatal dive. Neighbor Francis Menley had just executed a perfect swan dive from the same building, and officers say Pitchford likely struck the poolside.

In Florence Alabama AP police say Marshall Emmons six died after his mother Louise Emmons thirty one screamed and the boy ran into flames at their home The bodies were found in a back bedroom and the fire chief said the blaze likely started from an electric stove left on
James R. Hoffa told the Teamsters convention in Miami Beach he would seek a doubling of per capitas from the union’s 1.5 million members to fund the headquarters and operations. He urged locals to raise payments from 40 to 8 cents, boosting annual contributions to support Washington HQ.
