Air bag ruling aims to boost car safety with phased rollout
Washington expects Congress to approve a Transportation Department plan that requires air bags or automatic safety belts in all new cars starting with 1982 models and fully by 1984, a move Secretary Brock Adams says could save about 9,000 lives a year. The phased three year schedule aims to ease industry costs and public reaction, with debate from critics and support from insurers and unions.
