Cuban school makes English the required foreign tongue
In Havana, Cuban pupils are taught English as the only required foreign language from seventh through ninth grade. Russian is offered in separate classes and in special language schools at Liberty City, a former Batista camp now part of the Education Ministry complex. About 7,990 students attend. The education system emphasizes socialist ideals and portrays the Soviet Union as a leader of the free world.
