Clare Beatty Sinks On Ohio River Ice Near Warsaw Ky

Towboat Clare E Beatty capsized and sank after ice flow lodged it above the river, as Capt John Beatty hoped to clear barges for the Corps of Engineers. He had refused to remove valuables, saying you dont undress a lady in public, and stayed aboard to guide the vessel through the ice. His wife described the craft as a home and noted the boat was a $900000 vessel with brass fittings and oil paints. Beatty had often recovered toxic cargo barges in recent years and his loss marked a personal tragedy for a riverman known for river salvage work.
