President Nixon, in a joint address, pledged cooperation with the House impeachment investigation while arguing his duties may limit full disclosure. He urged Congress to pass a national agenda in 1974, address the energy crisis, and outlined a $304.4 billion federal budget amid mixed Democratic reactions.
The president praised defense spending without new taxes and framed the 10 point program as an agenda of significant progress. He noted the plan blends revised prior proposals with new elements as part of his eight year legacy.
President Nixon said Arab oil producers would soon hold an urgent meeting and boycott against the United States. He urged Congress to pass measures to reduce dependence on Arab oil and noted the Tripoli session as a possible reference, but officials offered no clarification.
In Newport Kentucky sixth grade pupils sent rhinestone cufflinks and a tie clasp with American flag designs for Nixon to wear during the State of the Union. Ohio and western Pennsylvania host a major trucker protest framed by independent owner operators. The Polish immigrant producer helped shape American cinema with classics like Wuthering Heights and Guys and Dolls and received the Medal of Freedom from President Nixon in 1971.
Cold air settles over Middletown area with tonight lows in the 20s and Friday highs in the upper 30s. A chance of rain is forecast Saturday after yesterday's high of 53 and overnight low of 42.
Four Japanese radicals blew up an oil tank at the Shell refinery off Singapore. Three of them hijacked a ship in Singapore harbor with six hostages and threatened self harm unless safe passage was granted. Police surrounded the vessel while the fourth radical remained at Pulau Bukom. The attackers claimed ties to the Japanese Red Army. The embassy confirmed a ship to shore call demanding the ambassador negotiate departure by plane.
Willis B. Boyer 58 chairman and chief executive of Republic Steel Corp died in a Cleveland suburb hospital after a cancer illness. He had been ill since mid December and became chairman last May after 36 years with the firm. Survivors include his widow and three sons. Service arrangements were incomplete.
