Blast injures twelve at Marietta Union Carbide plant

A chemical reaction in an epoxy resin unit caused a runaway pressure led to a tank rupture. Twelve workers were injured, one critical and four serious, as a vat hurled debris 400 feet toward the Ohio River. Most workers were in the emergency squad spraying water to control the reaction.

Soviet Officer Fires At Kremlin Parade Cosmonauts

A Soviet Army lieutenant wearing a policeman’s uniform fired at a motorcade carrying government leaders and cosmonauts near the Kremlin Borovitsky Gate on January 22, then died after taking poison. He had left his post in Leningrad on January 20, borrowed a militia uniform to observe the parade, and was subdued by Kremlin guards. Authorities have not disclosed a motive or whether others were involved.

Plane hijacked to Cuba diverts from Louisiana coast

National Airlines DC8 with 63 aboard was seized off Louisiana by a gunman and flown to Havana. Flight 44 from San Francisco to Miami with Tampa stop landed in Havana at 6:58 a.m. EST. Pilot Capt Leeds told Houston control I am diverting to Havana.

Huge North Vietnamese Base Found Northwest of Saigon

U S air cavalrymen uncovered a vast North Vietnamese base about 53 miles northwest of Saigon in War Zone C. The four square mile site reportedly housed 750 to 1 000 bunkers, a large underground hospital, dining halls, a bicycle shop, and a command post as forces suspected preparations for a winter spring offensive.

Peace Talks Deadlocked After Long Session

Paris AP reports the Vietnam peace talks stalled after seven hours in the longest session since talks began last May. Four delegations blamed each other over basic approaches and agreed to meet again next Thursday as public rhetoric continued.
