Butler County tax rates for 1962 rise in 28 districts and fall in 20, with Middletown and Hamilton showing notable changes. Middletown drops 36 cents to 31.52, while Hamilton city edges up five cents to 35.76. many townships and local districts show mixed gains and losses across the list.
An Ohio woman, Marvel E. Korn, 61, of Jackson Center, died when her car skidded on U S 68 near the Clark Champaign county line and struck a telephone pole. The accident occurred about a mile south of the county line.
In Lebanon a temporary restraining order halts Production Plating Works from hiring new staff while a labor dispute with United Steelworkers is resolved. Judge Warren C. Young set deadlines for briefs from both sides, with a ruling not expected for about a month. The USW contends a recruiting drive aimed to replace union workers.
Jackson Michigan AP report quotes Fire Chief Leo Fox stating three fires in the past week were caused by rubber padded brassieres. He said heat from automatic drying processes ignited other garments in laundry baskets, attributing the incidents to spontaneous combustion.
A Suttphin Street resident reported thefts to police after finding clothing on his front porch identified as Ray Durkin from Springfield whose car was burglarized Tuesday. Charles Tucker of 192 Dix Road said two tool boxes with wrenches and other tools valued at 40 dollars were stolen from his car earlier this week.
Roger Lawson 32 of 3108 Jefferson Road was bound over to the Butler County grand jury under $2,500 bond on a manslaughter charge in Middletown Municipal Court. He was arrested Jan. 4 after hospital release for a crash on Stanley Street that killed Harold Eugene Flaugher 22. Flaugher a hairdresser born in Denton Kentucky died from multiple head injuries. In other court action Judge J T Lamb fined David Rowland 21 for assault and battery and William Russell 38 fined for defrauding an innkeeper. Herman Whitt 39 fined $50 for no operator s license but the fine was suspended if he stays out of state.
Gov James A Rhodes announced the appointment of Arthur L Peterson of Delaware to the Ohio Civil Rights Commission to succeed Albert J Dillehay of Akron. Peterson, 36, heads the Ben A Arneson Institute of Practical Politics at Ohio Wesleyan University. His term runs until July 28 1967. G F E Strauss was named acting public works director to replace T J Kauer who resigned to take a Highway Department job.
