Breedlove Fireman Turns Racer to Set World Land Speed Records
Craig Breedlove, 22, left a Costa Mesa fire job to build a jet powered car and reclaim the U S land speed record. By 1963 he hit 407.5 mph at Bonneville, becoming first to top 400 mph, later smashing to 600.6 mph, while his wife Lee joined the crew and set a women’s mark with 308.6 mph. Breedlove’s path included marriage, financial strain, and sponsorship by Goodyear to complete Spirit of America.
