Auschwitz Liberation Marked by World Leaders in Poland
Survivors and 30 leaders including Cheney and Putin commemorated Auschwitz on the 60th anniversary of its liberation. A torchlit ceremony framed by snow and barbed wire featured candles, memorials, and a pyrotechnic display on a half mile of railroad tracks. Survivors spoke of memory, warning against anti-Semitism and modern terrorism, while leaders acknowledged Nazi crimes and Europe’s responsibility.
