Middletown faces an energy crisis with Gov. James A. Rhodes urging voluntary fuel conservation and school closures. Subzero temperatures, heavy snow, and limited gas supply threaten businesses and travel, with roads impassable and several days of class cancellations expected.
The Associated Press reports another Arctic blast swept the Midwest bringing bitter cold, heavy snow and strong winds. By early morning the front reached the western Great Lakes and central plains and moved rapidly toward the southeast.
Emergency board action closes Middletown and nearby districts with travel warnings and gas supply cuts. Supt. Dalton to decide further closings. some schools plan to stay open if weather permits. Snow and frigid temperatures cause widespread disruption across the region.
Area manufacturers face uneven shutdowns as gas rationing spreads. Armco and Black Clawson report minimal effects due to alternate fuels. several plants in Franklin Monroe and Middletown close or cut shifts, including Chester Products Long Co. and Miami Valley Paper, while others shift to fuel oil or reduce hours. Overall, about 1,000 workers on short weeks and 150 on vacation amid ongoing management reviews.
Ohio lawmakers explore alternatives as more than 400 of 617 districts close amid severe weather and energy shortages. Governor Rhodes declared an energy crisis while Senate leaders discuss ending the 182 day requirement to permit weather driven school plan changes.
Temperatures fall to five to ten degrees below zero each night and rise only to five above during the day. Another ten below morning and highs from five to fifteen above are expected Sunday. Cold continues Monday with a possible warming Tuesday to twenty five. Snow chances are eighty percent tonight and sixty percent Saturday.
In Middletown, most merchants cut hours with some staying regular. Groceries Hills Way and Twin Fair report no change. Elder Beerman Wards Penney's and Mableys close Sunday with Saturday and Monday 10 am to 5 pm. McAlpins open 10 am-5 pm today Saturday and noon-5 pm Sunday. Sears plans 5 pm close today and tomorrow. Sunday and Monday schedules unclear. First National and Barnitz banks close at 1:15 pm. Monroe Barnitz branch opens tomorrow 11 am-5:30 pm.
Tonight's all area basketball schedule is postponed with many games cancelled including Middletown at Princeton Madison at Lebanon Franklin at Monroe Fenwick at Lakota Bellbrook at Carlisle Greenville at Valley View Springboro at Mason Talawanda at Eaton and several others. Makeup dates not announced.
