Ohio Utilities Commission ordered drastic gas service cuts to protect public health and safety as temperatures fell to minus 27. Ohio Fuel Gas Co, serving half the state and about two million customers, must curtail nonessential gas use to the fullest extent.
A severe cold wave and fuel shortage crippled industry from the Rockies to New England. Detroit saw about 200000 workers idle as auto production halted. Pittsburgh area errand 145000 idle amid gas curtailments. Ohio and northeastern states faced drastic plant shutdowns and widespread layoffs as utilities cut gas supplies.
Jerusalem reports violence across Palestine with nine dead overnight including a Jewish shop destroyed by an explosion. An Arab was arrested after a convoy came under fire. In Tel Aviv two Jewish prisoners abducted from Jayarkon Hospital. Cairo accuses Cairo rifles shipment to Palestine Arabs. Syria reports arms from Czechoslovakia. Orville Wright, 76, co inventor of the airplane, was reported unchanged at Miami Valley Hospital where he was admitted after his second heart attack since October. He rested easily and was described as much better, with Dr. A B Brower noting the second attack was less severe than the first.
The White House declines to intervene in Pvt Thomas A. Gusik’s case after he was convicted of killing two Italians near Leghorn Italy last August. An Army review reduced his life sentence to 16 years leading Cleveland supporters to pursue help from Rep Crosser and veterans groups.
Nine to share in the Corrigan estate including five notable Clevelanders. The $20,000,000 of James W. Corrigan’s estate will be divided into sixteenths after the widow Laura Mae Corrigan’s death in New York last week. The will from 1921 provided Mrs. Corrigan life income and leaves the remainder to heirs. Income to Mrs. Corrigan reportedly ran about $400,000 yearly in recent years.

Two more aftershocks were reported in Iloilo City as central Philippines faced $3.5 million in church damages and 200 houses destroyed by landslides. The unofficial death toll stood at 28 with two families missing on Panay Island where Iloilo is the capital.
City commissioners ordered City Manager Karl H. Kugel to advertise bids for converting the former waterworks building in Sandusky into an Ohio National Guard armory. Estimated project cost is 40,000 dollars.
Huntington Corps of Engineers reports a shore to shore freeze over on the Ohio River above Gallipolis and Millersport near Lock 27. Col John Ro Sharyn says no boats are moving on the river as of today.
