Salem Fears Heritage Wiped by Downtown Renewal
Salem residents fear a 39 acre renewal plan will demolish 141 old buildings in Heritage Plaza East. Historic Salem Inc and the Peabody Museum oppose the plan while supporters cite traffic gains and preserved landmarks like the Salem Fraternity. The plan preserves some structures including town hall from 1817 and adds a walking mall, parking and a new street.
