In Washington the Pentagon issued a Stop order as Vietnam peace talks accelerate toward a settlement. Key participants brace for a complex process and the uncertain days ahead amid the approaching cease-fire.
Defense Secretary Laird says most GIs will depart Vietnam with only some skilled personnel staying to assist. The Paris cease-fire sets a 60 day pullout after the cease-fire takes effect. Canada and other nations prepare observer forces while Nguyen Duy Trinh heads to Paris and Rogers travels there Friday.
The funeral procession for Lyndon B. Johnson moved from the Capitol to the National City Christian Church in Washington with Lady Bird Johnson and family, as leaders from the U.S. and abroad gathered to pay respects. Nixon planned a state funeral procession, while a 12 page peace plan aimed to end U.S. involvement in Indochina and begin postwar reconstruction with a four nation control commission overseeing a cease-fire and talks.
Communists launched more than 100 attacks in 24 hours and inflicted nearly 600 Vietnamese casualties, according to the Saigon command.
Saigon reports four fliers previously listed as missing were reclassified as killed in action. Six Americans wounded, two nonhostile deaths. South Vietnamese totals show 358 killed, 1,481 wounded, 32 missing. North Vietnamese and Viet Cong losses cited at 923,938 killed. Cease-fire endgame noted with continued enemy attacks and “land-grab” aims.
The Vietnam peace agreement includes four protocols covering mine removal from North Vietnamese waters cease-fire arrangements the international supervisory commission and prisoner return. Diplomats see a protocol as a subsidiary agreement, with the four protocols totaling 26 pages.
