In Coalbrook South Africa a high speed drill advances toward 440 trapped miners after Thursday rockslides blocked the shaft. An emergency shaft is planned to supply food and air, as crews push a 15 inch bore 80 feet in, with engineers estimating 40 hours to reach the trapped area.
A nationwide House banking subcommittee survey notes high discounts charged by money lenders when buying second mortgages. In Columbus, Ohio buyers face up to 50 percent discounts, Cleveland about 25 percent, and Cincinnati described as minimum. The report explains a second mortgage funds home purchases lacking full down payment and carries shorter repayment.
A district FHA report from Ohio cites sellers accepting discounts to unload second mortgages, with banks paying as little as half the face value. It notes widespread use in homes priced 10 000 to 13 000 and that second mortgages carry about six percent interest, though discount rates from 3 to 30 percent are reported.
Rep. Albert M. Rains leads a push for one billion dollars in special housing aid. He argues a FHA GI mortgage purchase program through FNMA would boost home construction and help owners avoid costly second mortgages, saying a spring collapse in housing looms without action.

She climbed out from a windowed tank kept at 95 degrees with outside weather at 45 degrees. The attempt surpassed Robert Ingollia's 842 hour record from Port Jefferson, New York.
A 24 year old blonde underwent liquid nourishment via tube and slept about 18 hours in a tank to publicize Pensacola s March of Dimes campaign. Hundreds of passers by observed the stunt as part of the publicity effort.
Eva Marie Saint, known as the screen’s nice girl, shocked Hollywood by using a four letter word at a star packed Screen Producers Guild dinner honoring Jack L. Warner with the Milestone Award. Jack Benny hosted and introduced Saint who was to present the Jesse L. Lasky inter-collegiate film award. Benny joked about Jessel writing the intro for Saint.
Miss Saint struggled at the podium muttering as the crowd gasped. Benny noted later that George Burns at a stag Friar’s testimonial never spoke like this.
At a dinner the Guild presented its Milestone award to Warner. The event featured remarks about the young speaker and Warner later recalled the challenge of following her with his comments.
In Algiers diehard French rightists hold barricades after weekend clashes. Army control firms up with paratroopers on Avenue Pasteur as about 1,000 insurgents shelter in two pockets. Death toll: 19 dead, 153 wounded, with eight policemen among the victims.
Arctic blasts shift toward the Miami Valley with a forecast of a partly cloudy day and a high near 36. Tonight will be mostly cloudy and not as cold with a low around 22. Tuesday turns much colder with snow flurries and a high near 27. Middletown’s Sunday high reached 31 at 4 p.m. and the morning low was 2 above at 4 a.m.
Mrs. Matilda Piatt, 40, found dead Sunday with a plastic bag over her head in her Rego Park, Queens apartment. Police call it an apparent death by own action. Her daughter Leslie, 9, discovered the body.
Bertrand Duhamel 22 Woonsocket appeared in District Court for speeding 100 mph. He claimed he chased a rival suitor after an infuriating confrontation saying he drove with the woman he loves. Judge Myette fined him $10 and warned he may never wed if he repeats the act.
A crowd along Boulevard Laferriere panicked as the first shots fired. Men and women fled from a barricade, tricolor flag in the air, while armed gendarmes and National Guardsmen moved in. Tommygun fire, cries of forward and take cover, and rapid ambulance arrivals marked a ten minute stretch of sporadic gunfire.

Eighty cases of whisky were stolen Sunday from a state wholesale store at 7640 Broadway. Two East Side men were arrested for questioning after patrolmen found the door jimmied and cars nearby containing whisky cases. Joseph De Pasquale and Mitchell Jasczyk were tied to the case, with further finds at De Pasquale’s residence. Police link the theft to a prior raid on January 12. The incident follows an Ohio Liquor Control budget cut removing burglar alarms from stores statewide.
A telephone call saved six people including a wife and four children in Oklahoma City as illness struck the family from gas fumes from a floor furnace. William E. Johnson awakened sick and alerted his mother-in-law and her brother-in-law who guided everyone outside and summoned aid. Fire Chief Ben Dancy said improper combustion caused the fumes.
