River walk halt to towboat pushing ice choked river

Captain W A Boudreaux with the City of Pittsburgh faced hundreds of Sunday pedestrians on the frozen Ohio River between Cincinnati and Covington as his 12 barges crewed by 105 feet across and 1 100 long pushed through mushy ice. Police on both sides lacked county jurisdiction while a Conrail train was blocked and a riverside landing jammed. The governor formed an energy emergency team as officials warned of danger and urged people away from the ice.

Weather outlook with cloudy skies and cold temps

Skies stay cloudy tonight with a 50 percent chance of snow flurries and a low around 20 to 25. Tuesday highs near 40s. Snowfall measured about 1 inch. Extended outlook shows chances of snow daily Wednesday to Friday with highs in the 20s to 30s and teens to near zero lows.

Valley View Schools Close Amid Gas Shortage in Ohio

Valley View School District voted to close all schools until further notice due to a statewide energy emergency. Midwestern area schools, including Middletown, reported limited operations as local businesses and offices cut thermostat use to conserve gas. Governor Rhodes urged conservation while Armco Steel reduced shifts for about 150 workers, and fuel supplies remained tight with gas usage rising versus last year.

Conservation measures urge 65 degree day 55 degree night settings

Residential natural gas users should set thermostats to 65 during the day and 55 at night, close unused rooms, and use fireplaces where possible. Stores and offices are asked to follow the same thermostat settings and turn off hot water in restrooms to save energy.

Carter calls for immediate halt to nuclear testing

President Carter urges instant and complete ban on all nuclear tests as part of a plan to curb arms and promote a full world ban.
