In Columbus two Ohio Penitentiary inmates were wounded during a failed escape attempt. Louis Aratari 28 of St Charles Illinois and Gordon Firman 23 of Warsaw Ohio were identified. Aratari was shot twice after fleeing pursued by guards. Firman was found in the hospital after being stabbed. Other tied to the break include Joseph Sanders 66 and Donald Nickerson 43 both Columbus Dayton residents. A makeshift ladder and hospital dormitory window bars were used to reach the yard.

Carl Hayden Enters Coma at 94 in Mesa Hospital
Former Sen. Carl T. Hayden, who served longer in Congress than any other man, is in a coma at a Mesa hospital. Hayden, 94, was hospitalized Dec. 30 for dehydration and slipped into a coma Saturday. He was first elected to Congress in 1912 after Arizona joined the Union and served in the House until 1926 before a long Senate tenure through 1968.
