U S government figures show consumer prices rose 0.5 percent in December. Annual inflation reached 7 percent in 1975, the best reading in three years, with food up 6.5 percent and nonfood goods up 6.2 percent. Purchasing power of workers’ pay held steady in December.
Snow flurries continue in the Middletown area with 10 to 15 degree lows tonight and a low 30s daytime high tomorrow. Yesterday's high reached 34 with a 17 degree overnight low and 2.5 inches of snow by 8 a.m. Today. The outlook calls for rain Friday cloudy Saturday and more rain Sunday.
President Ford unveiled a 394.2 billion dollar spending plan with a 43 billion dollar deficit, calling for defense spending rises, higher Social Security taxes, and welfare cuts. He seeks 10 billion dollar tax cuts this year and 28 billion next year, plus state control of 59 federal programs, including Medicaid, to curb federal growth while aiming for a balanced budget by 1979.
