Euclid schools agree to 15 percent black faculty goal

Cleveland AP report says Euclid Ohio schools must hire one quarter of new teachers as black until 15 percent of faculty are black under a consent agreement with the Justice Department. The plan requires interviews at 16 area colleges and an annual trip to Central State University and Wilberforce College to recruit minority teachers.

Inflation Hits Record Peacetime High in 1974

Washington AP reports consumer prices rose seven tenths of a percent, pushing the inflation rate to 12.2 percent for 1974. The gain is the highest in 28 years and the worst peacetime rise since 1913, with energy and food driving most of the increase and forecasters predicting slower gains in 1975.

Charles Jamieson, rescued from a February 1945 North Atlantic life raft, spent nearly 30 years at the U S Public Health Service Hospital in Boston. Fire guts Columbus historic VOA building on near west side

A Monday night blaze gutted the 80 year old Volunteers of America building on Columbus near west side. About 30 transients sleeping in a dormitory section escaped with no serious injuries. The two story brick building once served as a Toledo and Ohio Central Railroad station until 1930 and is listed as a National Historic Landmark. Officials cite faulty wiring as the likely cause.

Pharmacist Substitution Urged to Cut Drug Costs Nationwide

A National Academy of Sciences panel urged allowing pharmacists to substitute cheaper generic drugs for prescribed brands to save patients money. The Drug Research Board unanimously reversed its earlier stance, calling for amendments to antisubstitution laws in 48 states. Florida and Michigan currently require doctor approval.
