A gunman who held 13 hostages in a North Houston Kroger for about ten hours fled to a nearby hardware store where he was captured. One hostage with a head injury was treated. Lt. William Doss and another hostage were unharmed. The suspect had used an unmarked police car and radio to threaten further violence.
The Middletown area expects occasional rain with possible tonight thundershowers. Daytime highs in the 50s, overnight lows near 40. Monday forecasts call for mainly cloudy skies and mid to upper 40s. Rain chance stands at about 80 percent today and tonight.
Denver Marks of the East Liverpool Canton truckers group warned of a shutdown affecting steel and brick haulers in eastern Ohio, northwestern West Virginia, and southwestern Pennsylvania. State authorities promise firm enforcement as Cincinnati, Youngstown, Canton and New Philadelphia truckers plan a large protest starting January 24.
President Nixon warned the energy shortage is real but pledged to avoid gasoline rationing this spring and vowed not to let prices soar. He urged voluntary energy conservation, ordered an audit of major oil company records to root out profiteering, and backed a windfall profits tax while aiming for U.S. energy self sufficiency by 1980.

In Damascus President Anwar Sadat of Egypt and President Hafez Assad of Syria met to discuss disengagement of Syrian and Israeli forces in the Golan Heights. The talks followed Sadat's signing of a separate Suez front disengagement with Israel, prompted by Damascus concerns about shifting battles.
In St Mary Cray England the three-day work week leaves Britons with enforced leisure. Factories idle and pubs busy as coal miners press for higher pay. People report boredom while pubs and theaters adapt, Sunday soccer returns, and entertainment venues struggle under power cuts.

He asks the cost of the three day ad eleven dollars and thirty four cents and offers his driver license birth certificate and two parking tickets. He says he hopes to provoke a smile amid political scandals.
