Mariner Probes End of Active Life and Venus Flyby
Mariner IV, after traveling over 1.4 billion miles, was last contacted years after its 1965 Mars mission, with five instruments still functioning. Mariner V, launched June 12 1967, passed 2 480 miles from Venus on October 19 and reported extreme heat and dense atmosphere. Contact with Mariner IV ended after a meteoric bombardment. Mariner V is to resume communication in September via Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Western Electric built the Bell System communications system for these missions.
