A Circuit Court jury in Selma Alabama found Bernard Steward a 22 year old white man guilty of second degree manslaughter in the death of John Arthur Langdon a Negro farm worker. Langdon was shot once with a .22 Magnum rifle on a dirt road south of Selma last November 5. Steward was one of three white men charged. the other two trials were not scheduled for this term.
CDC reports 1,054 influenza and pneumonia deaths in the second week of 1968 across 122 cities, nearly double the 594 expected. Over the first two weeks, 1,859 such deaths were recorded. Only the Pacific region stayed below epidemic threshold. outbreaks of type A influenza rose in 27 states with 10 reporting influenza-like illnesses.
In Pittsburgh two bank robbers fought with two city detectives then abducted an officer at gunpoint and forced him to drive. The detective escaped when he braked the car and rolled out. The robbers hijacked a cab driven by Eleanor Savers, paid her $1, and disappeared toward Hazlewood after the Clairton bank job. The officer alerted the FBI.
Benjamin J. Corbistello of Wellsville Ohio and five Pennsylvania men were indicted by a federal grand jury on interstate gambling charges. FBI and IRS raids by November 5 disrupted operations at the Red Dog casino and the Lantern Inn in New Cumberland.
