More than half the lives were saved by seat belts according to a U.S. Department of Transportation report released Tuesday. The study covers child safety seats energy absorbing steering columns roof and side protection and shatter resistant windshields with annual lives saved rising from 115 in 1960 to 25000 in 2002.
Fifth Third Bancorp reports a 60 percent drop in fourth quarter profit to 176 million dollars or 31 cents a share, vs 442 million or 77 cents a year earlier, as low interest rates bite. Full year earnings total 1.5 billion dollars, down 7 percent from 1.7 billion.</s>
Fannie Mae officials were told a suspected fraud lender sought to pass troubled loans to Ginnie Mae. A 2002 North Carolina trial showed First Beneficial Mortgage Co. defrauded Fannie Mae with phony borrowers. After learning of the fraud, Fannie Mae demanded buybacks and First Beneficial used a similar scam to sell to Ginnie Mae, costing $23 million.
University of Dayton officials unveiled a four story 102 room Courtyard by Marriott to be built near UD Arena along I 75 and the Great Miami River. UD and Concord Hospitality will own the hotel with Concord operating 43 hotels in 10 states and Canada. The project, first Dayton area hotel since the early 1980s, centers a 2.46 acre site beside the UC softball stadium with a 1.7 acre restaurant site adjacent. Construction starts spring and should finish in spring 2006.
Airbus unveiled the double deck A380 jet hailed as a symbol of Europe’s tech and economic strength. The superjumbo plans 800 passenger capacity, highlights Europe Boeing rivalry, with a $13 billion program and first commercial flight set for 2006.
MeadWestvaco agrees to sell its paper making business to Cerberus Capital Management in a 2.3 billion deal based in Dayton. The new company will include 6,300 employees, 200 in Dayton’s Courthouse Square, plus 900,000 acres of forestlands and key mills in Chillicothe Escanaba Luke Rumford Wickliffe. Peter H Vogel Jr will become CEO, with Matthew Jesch as CFO and other executives named. The sale is expected to close in Q2 and MeadWestvaco will retain 1.2 million acres of forestland.
